We have just completed the first in a series of new interviews. This one is with James Thompson who runs the voip-info.org wiki:
Question 1: How long have you been running the voip-info.org wiki?
I started voip-info in Sept 2003.
There is a little bit more info at the end of this article. Although the statistics given in that article are of course out of date.
Question 2: What gave you the idea to start it?
In 2003 it was a lot harder to learn about VOIP than it is now and I wanted to share the information I was collecting.
Question 3: What is your favourite OpenSource software?
Asterisk!
Question 4: Is the wiki your main work?
voip-info.org is a spare time project. I'm one of the founders of www.commpartners.us, and it keeps me more than busy.
Question 5: Does it require much in the way of maintenance?
I haven't been spending a lot of time on day-to-day content maintence as we have a wonderful user community that is always making updates and contributing new content. I answer emails to support at voip-info.org and have been working on improving system performance and adding new software features.
I plan to roll out improved software, and new server hardware in the next few weeks.
Question 6: What areas of the wiki see the most changes?
Although there is a wide range of popular VOIP and traditional Telephone information on the site, the Asterisk related portions of voip-info.org are the most active.
Question 7: Where do you see the wiki going in the future?
I will be adding new features, and improving existing ones.
I'm always happy to get requests for new features and have implemented custom features for a couple of projects.
Any VOIP and/or Telephone related open source or commerical project is welcome to use voip-info.org support their products.
Question 8: Favourite food/drink?
I'm rather fond of carrot-celery juice.
Question 9: Will you be at Astricon Dallas?
I don't know yet.
Question 10: Favourite Asterisk Software?
The Asterisk AGI interface. It is very easy and quick to develop custom Asterisk applications using the AGI interface. I've looked at the development environment for doing custom applications on some commerical platforms, and there is no comparision. Asterisk is way easier.
Question 11: Favourite Programming Language?
Perl
